Finding the athlete within: Cole Pediatric Therapy hosts a Young Athlete Program
February 23, 2013
Cole Pediatric Therapy hosted the Special Olympics Young Athletes Program, providing a fun-filled afternoon for children of all abilities. With the help of over 25 Cole Health volunteers, the Klein HS JROTC and Special Olympics Program Associates; 40+ children ranging from toddler to over 18 years of age were able to participate in the 8-station course including the following activities:
- Bean Bag Toss
- Cone Weave
- Balance Beam Walk
- Rope-light obstacle path
- Hola Hoop Hop-through
- Tunnel Crawl
Opening ceremonies were conducted around 3:30pm in which the children gathered to carry the ‘torch’ through the extravagantly designed balloon arch. Upon completing each of the stations, participants were given stickers, which ended with the receipt of a medal and opportunity to have their photo taken on the finisher’s platform.
The Young Athletes Program provided opportunities for Cole Pediatric Therapy patients to celebrate their abilities and successes as well as letting them showcase what they had been learning in therapy. The family-oriented event included the siblings of the patients, giving them an opportunity to join the celebration and become a part of their therapy achievements. Along with these benefits, the participants were able to focus on improving their socialization skills and self confidence.
Cole Health would like to thank all those who volunteered their time to make this event a success. A special thanks goes to Cody Meredith, Special Olympics Program Associate for providing us with the opportunity.
