Diabetes: Learn how to cope with health related issues

by admin

Both types of Diabetes can lead to several health related issues and serious complications. Coping with these health related issues can be very difficult. Monitoring and keeping blood sugar levels as close to normal can help decrease the development of the following complications:

  • High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)
  • Skin Disorders such as skin infections
  • Stroke
  • Eye Damage
  • Kidney Disease
  • Peripheral Artery Disease
  • Diabetic Neuropathy

It is important to be able to recognize the symptoms of high and low blood sugar levels:

  •  Excessive thirst and appetite
  • Increased urination (sometimes as often as every hour)
  • Unusual weight loss or gain
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea, perhaps vomiting
  • Blurred vision
  • In women, frequent vaginal infections
  • In men and women, yeast infections
  • Dry mouth
  • Slow-healing sores or cuts
  • Itching skin, especially in the groin or vaginal area

Following a Healthy Diabetic Lifestyle will help you reduce your risk for developing health related issues. Remember the ABC’s:

A: Maintaining a normal A1c or hemoglobin A1c test, which measures average blood sugar over the previous three months.

B:  Maintaining normal blood pressure,

C:  Maintaining normal cholesterol levels

To maintain the ABCs, we recommend:

  • Eating a wide variety of foods
  • Having a colorful plate; this is the best way to ensure that you are eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, meats, and other forms of protein such as nuts, dairy products, and grains/cereals
  • Watching serving sizes
  • Eating foods high in fiber such as whole grain breads, fruit, and cereal
  • Maintaining recommended weight
  • Reducing alcohol consumption
  • Exercising daily
  • Following up with your physician regularly
  • Reducing Stress
  • Getting Vaccinated (Flu/Pneumonia)
